Il 12 aprile il mondo della ricerca spaziale in generale - e la comunità dei radioamatori in particolare - celebrano il 50esimo anniversario del primo volo orbitale effettuato dall'uomo. Moltissime le iniziative, incluso un network di stazioni amatoriali russe impegnate nella realizzazioni di contatti celebrativi:

Da non perdere assolutamente la pagina speciale realizzata da Anatoly Zak, giornalista russo che ha studiato negli Stati Uniti è ha messo insieme una poderosa mole di testimonianze su questo mezzo secolo di attività spaziali in Unione Sovietica e Russia. So già che il mio sito riceverà qualche visita dai navigatori incuriositi dalle notizie riprese ancora oggi dai media sulle controverse ricezioni delle trasmissioni dallo spazio effettuate a cavallo di anni 50 e 60 dai fratelli torinesi Judica Cordiglia (controverse perché i due fratelli hanno sostenuto la tesi, mai confermata ufficialmente e anzi confutata anche da fonti indipendenti, dei tragici incidenti che sarebbero costati le vite di presunti predecessori di Gagarin). Le informazioni raccolte da Anatoly possono essere molto chiarificatrici.
Coinvolto nei festeggiamenti anche un satellite radioamatoriale, ARISSat-1 in questo momento a bordo della Stazione Spaziale in attesa di rilascio. Attraverso una antenna esterna ARISSat-1 è attivo in questi giorni, fino alle 10.30 UTC di domani, sulle frequenze e nelle modalità qui di seguito indicate (riporto anche i link ai programmi Windows e Mac necessari per la decodifica della telemetria trasmessa in modalità BPSK):
ARISSat-1 to be Activated Aboard ISS Starting April 11The ARISSat-1 satellite, presently still inside the ISS, will be turned on and use an external antenna to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first manned space flight. The transmissions will begin on Monday 11 April 2011 at 14:30 UTC and continue until 10:30 UTC on 13 April 2011. Due to the fact that the solar panels are covered, the satellite will be powered only by the onboard battery. The satellite will run in low power mode. This means that the transmissions will cycle ON/OFF. They will be ON for 40-60 seconds and OFF for 2 minutes.145.950 MHz FM Downlink:FM transmissions will cycle between a voice ID, select telemetry values, 24 international greeting messages in 15 languages and SSTV images. One of the messages will be a conversation between Yuri Gagarin and ground control.145.919 MHz CW BeaconThe CW transmissions will be callsign ID, select telemetry, and callsigns of people actively involved with the ARISS program.145.920 MHz SSB BPSK-1000 TelemetryThe BPSK transmissions will feature a new 1kBPSK protocol developed by Phil Karn, KA9Q to be readable in low signal level conditions. The BPSK data will transmit satellite telemetry. Given the low duty cycle of the spacecraft, those planning to receive the digital telemetry are encouraged to record the entire signal band using the FunCube dongle or SDR-IQ receivers.
