La programmazione nazionale di Clear Channel abbatte il mito della radiofonia locale USA


Incalzato dall'ibiquità di servizi come la radio satellitare e le piattaforme musicali in streaming via Internet, sta tramontando il mito americano dela radio urbana e rurale o comunque locale. Un mito condizionato storicamente da una tecnologia che ottanta anni fa non consentiva la messa in rete dei programmi radiofonici e che ha resistito sul piano culturale anche quando le tecnologie erano perfettamente disponibili.
La radio americana localistica soffre - e gli altri media se ne accorgono, qui un pezzo molto critico apparso sul portale FoxNews - davanti a fenomeni come Sirius XM, che copre dal cielo l'intero territorio americano e risulta molto appetibile per gli abbonati paganti e le grandi aziende inserzioniste. Ma soffre anche per colpa di un'altra forma di ubiquità, rivolta non al territorio ma all'insieme dei suoi individui. Pandora e la musica in streaming raggiunge tutti e a tutti è capace di dare qualcosa di molto specifico, personalizzato. E' il paradosso di una forma di radiofonia iper-localizzata ma disponibile ovunque, un modello che la radio locale non può imitare visto che via etere sarebbe impossibile accendere una stazione radio pro capite.
Ancora una volta Clear Channel, proprietario di centinaia di stazioni urbane USA, è al centro di questa profonda trasformazione. In queste settimane l'operatore radiofonico ha preso importanti decisioni, prima licenziando personale e animatori in molte stazioni attive nei mercati pubblicitari più piccoli, poi annunciando la nomina di una squadra nazionale di "responsabili di formato", un "brand management team" che si occuperà della programmazione diffusa a livello nazionale dall'intero network basandosi sulle decisioni di un ristretto gruppo di personalità esperte dei diversi formati musicali e dell'immagine del brand Clear Channel. La parola d'ordine, in ogni caso, è "national programming" (nella foto il responsabile a livello corporate, Darren Davis), concetto che la radio americana fatica ancora ad abbracciate. Potenziata anche l'offerta di iHeart Radio, la piattaforma in streaming che Clear Channel ha schierato in risposta a Pandora. Anche questa sarà una piattaforma sempre più unitaria e nazionale nella distribuzione e sempre più aperta alla personalizzazione sul singolo ascoltatore in virtù dei nuovi strumenti tecnologici di relazione offerti dai social media.
Come andrà a finire per la radiofonia locale? L'accesso alle risorse finanziarie, ovvero agli investimenti pubblicitari, sarà sempre più difficoltoso, ma l'unico modo per sopravvivere è riuscire a fare incontrare gli ultimi residui del localismo: comunità dei cittadini-consumatori da un lato e nelle attività economiche specifiche delle aree metropolitane. Sarà una partita molto difficile perché la radiofonia urbana sta perdendo colpi anche in ambiti fondamentali come l'informazione locale e quella sul traffico automobilistico, anche qui incalzata dai social media e dalle tecnologie di car navigation e traffic information.

New Team Will Be Part of Clear Channel’s National Programming Platforms
Kelly Doherty Named Director of Imaging for National Programming Platforms
New York, NY – November 3, 2011 – Clear Channel Radio, the leading media company in America with a greater reach in the U.S. than any radio or television company, today announced 24 appointments to its new Brand Management Team, a part of its new National Programming Platforms; and the appointment of Kelly Doherty as Director of Imaging. All positions are effective immediately.
Tom Poleman, recently appointed President of National Programing Platforms leads the division, which focuses on developing on-air and digital programming content as well as live events that will leverage Clear Channel’s 850 stations and websites and iHeartRadio for listeners, advertisers and strategic partners.
The new Brand Management Team, which consists of a Brand Manager and Brand Coordinator for each format, will serve as Clear Channel’s in-house format experts. The team will help manage the highly effective Premium Choice Network, which imports and exports programming innovation and excellence from region to region, market to market and station to station providing the highest quality research, talent and programming otherwise unavailable. The team will also be available to consult with select stations and to assist Clear Channel’s Senior Vice Presidents of Programming as needed throughout the country, and will gather and share format-specific content, information and resources throughout the field. Other responsibilities will include the development of format-specific contest opportunities and involvement in research and major marketing initiatives executed within their respective formats. Darren Davis, Senior Vice President and General Manager of National Programming Platforms will lead the Brand Management Team.

Also today, Clear Channel named Kelly Doherty (Kelly, Kelly, Kelly) Director of Imaging for the National Programming Platforms. Doherty, previously Imaging Director for KIIS-FM, KYSR FM and Ryan Seacrest programming (AT40/On Air/Entertainment Edge) in Los Angeles, will expand her responsibilities and will oversee Clear Channel’s creative imaging efforts including the representation for national programming, products, promotions such as the new Artist Integration Program and large contest and events including the iHeartRadio Music Festival.
